Summer fishing on Mosquito Lagoon

It was so nice to be back on Mosquito Lagoon after a week in the North of chasing wild trout on the dry fly. Yesterday I had the pleasure to fish with the Ashton Brothers from Orlando, Fl. Kane and Kevin joined me early yesterday morning to chase Redfish on the flats of the Lagoon. This was Kane's second trip with me on the Lagoon and I knew he would tear them up. The 10-15 knot winds made it a little tough to see nervous water and tails, but it did not take long to get our first shot at some big tails. Kane and Kevin made some great casts at these fish but no takers. A bit more searching on the flat and we spotted another small group of tailing fish, great cast and Kane was hooked up! Good fight and lots of strong runs, but Kane handled this fish well. We then headed to a flat that has held big schools of Black Drum. However, with the chop and glare we had a hard time finding them.

Off to the back country we went to try and get out of the wind. It was a little more sheltered and it was full of fish!! Kevin made beautiful cast to a cruising fish and it slammed his bait. This fish made some huge runs in less then a foot of water. Kevin handled this fish very well and it soon came to hand. We tried to find some of the Bull Reds, but conditions were tough to see them and the thunderstorms were coming quick. Called it a day and headed back to the ramp. Nice work guys!!!!

I tell you, it is always great to fish with young anglers. Sure wish more parents would step up and introduce their kids to fishing. If you have a chance to take a kid fishing....please do it!!!

See you on the water,

Capt. Todd.
